Fashion IT Course Review
Now, please join us on the tour of <Fashion-IT Cultural Road>
that unveils the past, present, and future of the economy of Korea.
ravaged to the point where its recovery seemed almost impossible. While everyone was still in despair, an industrial complex
was built in Guro, which used to be nothing more than an empty field. Thereafter, the sweat and young energy of 114,000
workers gathered at this place, and soon the Guro Industrial Complex rose as the center of the "Miracle on the Han River" that
led to the Korean economy's miraculous growth. The Guro Industrial Complex, which once led the "Miracle on the Han River,” has now transformed into a fashion IT hub
to pave the way for a new era of miracle.
<Digital Complex Ogeori>.
In 1985, there was the "Guro Alliance Strike," the first joint
labor strike in South Korea. The strike was so grand in scale
that 2,500 workers joined forces to conduct a joint strike in
the Guro area to fight against the oppression of the labor
union movement. The very strike took place at <Digital
Complex Ogeori>, which then was called ‘Garibong Ogeori.’
For a moment, I pictured the outcry and roar of workers who
would have once filled this street.
which are Fashion Outlets.
It mainly consists of three large stores; Hyundai Outlet, W Mall and Mario Outlet, spanning over an area of
270,000㎡.
the world, may be too large to take a look around even if an
entire day is spent here.
Perhaps, because the shopping mall has been selected as a
reliable shopping space by the Chinese Ministry of Culture
and Tourism, many foreign visitors continue to flock here.
The Guro Industrial Complex was able to rise as the hub of
the ‘Miracle on the Han River’ from an empty field due to its
bold attempts. Perhaps, because this spirit of challenge had
never left the site, the challenge of ‘Mario Outlet,’ which
began to offer drastic discounts on popular brand products
in 2001 when even the concept of a fashion outlet was largely
unheard of, has transformed the Guro Industrial Complex
into the nation's largest fashion outlet complex.
overpass linked to the fashion
complex will take you to
<Export Bridge>.
This bridge is an elevated walkway connecting Guro Industrial
Complex 1 and 3, and it was named “Export Bridge” to mark
its great contribution towards exports as textile products
manufactured in Guro Industrial Complex were sold overseas
passing through this bridge.
The bridge, which led the remarkable growth of the Korean
economy and still continues to play its role for people and
vehicles, ignites a sense of gratitude in me.
on your left, you will see “Mario Outlet 3”
with a chimney-shaped sculpture standing before
its building.
In order to capture the historical value of Guro Industrial Complex, the site
installed a chimney-shaped sculpture on the roof and by the entrance of the
building, while its outer walls were engraved with the names of companies and
persons who contributed to the growth of the Guro Industrial Complex to
preserve its value.
I remember once reading the phrase, “only the forgotten are truly dead.”
The world is undergoing transformation so rapidly that we often fail to recognize what has been lost.
In this harsh reality, an encounter with such sincerity and trace fills me with emotions.
As you come out of "Mario Outlet 3," you will walk
through a forest of buildings filled with green
windows.
This road is the <Fashion IT Cultural Zone> Many IT build
ings together with a number of fashion outlets line each
side of the street.
Who would have known that these buildings would be built on this land
that was once nothing more than empty field decades ago? If you walk
around this place after seeing the photos of the previous Guro Industrial
Complex, you cannot help but feel the remarkable growth of Korea.
There are also many sculptures erected on this street to cherish the
memory of the Guro Industrial Complex, so it would be fun to look at
them.
Digital Complex Station and enter into the alleyway,
you will find the <Interactive Exhibit of Guro Industrial Complex Workers>,
the highlight of this course.
-
It is a reproduction of the living space of
the female workers at the Guro
Industrial Complex, which was so small
and dense that it was often called a
"chicken coop house" or a "bee hive
house.”This place offers you to experience various
aspects of the female workers who devoted
their blooming youth to industrialization and
democratization of the Republic of Korea,
and the “Slice Room Experience Center” is
particularly impressive. -
At first, the entire space appeared as a single
This feeling is similar to what I felt for the
room as its low and narrow hallway made me
stoop, but there were in fact six slice rooms
inside. As I entered the room after taking my
shoes off, I was choked with emotion at the
remembrance of the female workers who sacri
ficed their youth for the nation and their
families, living in this tiny space.
history of armed resistance during my visit
to the Independence Hall of Korea.
The place is open from 10am to 5pm every day except Sunday,
Lunar New Year and Chuseok, so please make sure you pay a visit while it is open.
As I came out of the experience center, I felt like restarting this course backwards this time. While walking
through the forest of tall and colorful buildings, I felt a deep appreciation towards the generation who dedi
cated their youth for this day to come.
I highly recommend you to visit the <Fashion-IT Cultural Road> that unfolds the past, present, and
future of the Republic of Korea.
